How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Soft Mica starts with one question: will this brush suit the person who is shopping for it? That means the handle you hold, the features you'll use and what the heads will cost you over time.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the shopper

A first electric brush, an upgrade from an old handle and a gift for a parent each call for something different. A brush with an app and seven modes is the wrong pick for someone who wants one button.

So each guide names who it's for. When a need narrows the choice, like a wide grip or a travel case, we say what to look for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the brushing style (round oscillating head or sonic), the number of modes and intensities, the timer, the pressure sensor and the charger. We also check battery life, what comes in the box and which replacement heads the handle takes.

Oral-B, Philips and other brands describe their brushes in their own words. So we name the brand for every claim and note the warranty terms they give.

3. We look at owner feedback

We read what owners report after using a brush for a while. We look for patterns, like batteries that fade early, chargers that stop working, loud motors or heads that wear out fast.

One angry comment doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A brush that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages current

Brands sell the same handle in many colors, bundles and editions, and models get replaced. We check each model number and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip brushes with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every brush we cover.

We also don't give dental advice. We don't say any brush whitens, protects gums or cleans better than another, and we label brand claims as the brand's claims.

Your dentist is the right person to ask about your teeth.
